Most people butcher idioms because they never learned what they actually mean. Take this phrase…

“Blood 🩸 is thicker than water 💧

What most think it means

Family bonds are the strongest.

What it ACTUALLY means

Chosen bonds can often go deeper than blood ties.

Here’s what the full proverb should be:

“The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.”

Meaning

Blood of the covenant = Bonds forged through choice, commitment, shared struggle, and sacred oaths. It means we are battle companions, respected associates, chosen family, committed peers or friends (as they say, “ride-or-die”).

Water of the womb = By genetic family ties you’re born into this.

The original meaning = Chosen loyalty trumps accidental biology.

Why betraying your chosen bonds destroys everything

  1. Trust dies permanently: “A shattered mirror may be mended, but the cracks remain visible.” It’s no longer business as usual. The affected become guarded, skeptical, or unwilling to rely on you again. Even if forgiveness is offered, the relationship may never return to its original depth.
  2. Reputation becomes toxic: People see your betrayal as a red flag. Doors close. Invitations and responses stop. Your social currency plummets because you betrayed a meaningful bond by spending it recklessly.
  3. People are left unable to trust others: Your guilt and their pain create emotional walls. You sabotage future connections. The affected resort to emotional distance and fear of intimacy or vulnerability.
  4. Retaliation is swift: Public exposure (they expose your actions). Network destruction (they sever connections you rely on). Professional consequences (they withdraw support and or influence).
  5. You lose yourself: “When you break a chosen bond, you don’t just lose them (person impacted), you lose the version of yourself who was worthy of their trust.” (integrity damage)

Nugget

Remember, chosen bonds are sacred because they’re earned, not inherited. Break them at your own peril. Choose your covenant carefully. And, honor it completely. Be well. 🛡️
